Pericles as a youngster dreams of restoring the Acropolis shattered by the Persians. He grows to become the all-powerful General and Leader of the Delian League of Athenian city-states. He uses part of the money meant for mutual defense against invaders to restore the Parthenon and other buildings situated on the Acropolis. After his wife leaves him, he meets and falls in love with the beautiful and intelligent Aspasia. She is well educated, rare for women at that time, and opens her school for education and philosophical discussions which the distinguished philosophers, statesmen, as well as women attend. In spite of the devastating wars Pericles is forced to fight, he manages to introduce beauty and culture within an era which became admired and world-renowned as the ""Golden Age of Pericles"".
